Jens Bjørn-Larsen (b.1965) studied at RDAM, and was already employed there as a part-time teacher in his second year of study. He subsequently received private tuition and attended courses and masterclasses in the USA, including under the legendary Arnold Jacobs.

Teaching

Jens teaches tuba at RDAM. He also teaches at Malmö Academy of Music, and in 2002 he was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover.

For a number of years he was also a visiting professor at the RNCM – the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Jens is very fond of teaching, and his students enjoy great success as prize-winners in major international competitions. Virtually all of Denmark’s tuba positions are held by Jens’s students.

Artistic practice

Jens is one of the most sought-after tuba soloists in the world, and is also a sought-after and successful teacher. He was solo tuba player in the Radio Symphony Orchestra (the Danish National Symphony Orchestra) from the mid-80s until 2005, and has also been a very diligent chamber and ensemble musician in both the Royal Danish Brass and Stockholm Chamber Brass. Jens also plays in the quintet Den Danske Messingkvintet together with teacher colleagues from the brass department at RDAM. Since 2010 he has been an associate member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Jens has appeared on numerous CD recordings, both as a soloist and as an orchestral musician.

He is also an artist with B&S/Melton, the world’s leading tuba brands, with whom he has designed two tuba models: B&S 3100WGJBL and Meinl Weston 5450 “Thor”

He has also received the Victor Borge Scholarship, the Gade Scholarship and the Gladsaxe Music Prize.

Jens has frequently participated, played concerts, held masterclasses and lectured at the conferences of ITEA - the International Tuba Euphonium Association.

Judge and jury chair at innumerable tuba competitions, including AEOLUS Wettbewerb, Deutscher Musikwettbewerb.

Representative duties, directorships

Former International Representative on the Board of Directors of ITEA - the International Tuba Euphonium Association.
