Martin Lohse
Martin Lohse (b. 1971) holds a diploma in composition and music theory from RDAM, where Niels Rosing-Schow was his principal study teacher. He studied under Hans Abrahamsen in the composer class (Advanced Postgraduate Diploma), which he completed with his debut concert in Copenhagen in October 2004.
Teaching
Martin has been teaching music theory at RDAM since 2005, and is currently the department head.
He has also taught in the Master’s programme in film composition at the Danish National Academy of Music, as well as at the composition camp at Engelsholm Folk High School, and has on several occasions given courses and solo lessons in composition and music theory for both classical, rhythmic and film composers.

Martin has written more than 100 works for choir, orchestra and various chamber music ensembles, with and without electronics. His works are performed internationally, in Europe, Asia and the US, and have been performed at numerous Danish and international festivals, including at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York in 2011 and 2018.
Martin’s music is melodic, tonal and at times stringently structured, rooted in techniques that he has developed from mathematical and scientific principles. In particular, the contradiction between slow time, the eternal, and fast time, the human, is essential to his artistic production and is often the underlying structure and force behind his works.
The music often has a strong emotional core, which Martin expresses in a way that is both simple and immediate, but also complex. There may be repeated harmonic patterns which, because of their slow, regular changes, are experienced as being fixed and unchanging, or melodies that either stand out clearly or are hidden behind several rhythmic or tempo layers – or do both at the same time.
The musical feeling, the emotional core of the music, is something that Lohse regards as imperative in order to connect the listener to the work. This opens up the possibility that the deeper structures and patterns in the work can be experienced and recognised – whether this recognition takes place consciously or unconsciously – as part of an overall artistic experience of the work.
In addition to composing acoustic and electroacoustic music, Martin Lohse also paints abstract pictures – preferably in pure, bright colours.

In 2001, Martin Lohse won the Danish Arts Foundation’s competition Yderligheder (“Extremes”) together with Carsten Bo Eriksen. He received the three-year working scholarship of the Danish Arts Foundation in 2003, and was awarded the Håkon Børresen Prize in 2012.
