Music Creation between Art and Pedagogy
This PhD will explore how creative musical processes are connected with mutuality and companionship.
The survey will consist of theoretical exploration within music psychology and – philosophy, and of empirical research in children’s music creation together with adults in pedagogical contexts, where the children are without specific musical skills. Theory will be brought into dialogue with the empirical research to develop and enhance new concepts.
The work will be presented in three consecutive scientific articles which are framed in the final thesis.
- A theoretical survey aiming to present a philosophical concept of music creation.
- A presentation of research in music creation with groups of children. The article seeks to account for how children and adults experience the mutual creation processes, and the relation between process (mutual creation) and result (musical composition / piece of music / work).
- The third article focuses on the social aspect. I will try to understand if, and if so, then how and why creating music together may have an impact on mutuality, companionship, self-esteem and shared identity.
