PULSAR 2024 - Video, performance and games
The composers explore, among other things, interactive music, video, horror, various forms of games, and communities. "Cells" for video and live music is a piece where members of the audience are to play a computer game. The game is a mixture of musical atmospheres, melodies, sound effects, and themes. The musicians play according to what happens in the computer game (on a big screen), so the one playing the game determines how the music will sound.
Michael Hope's piece "maeLstroM" is for a solo conductor who conducts music from the speakers. The conductor prepares the "ensemble," providing a series of dramatic upbeats and gestures, which ultimately turn into chaotic complex music. The conductor's movements are inspired by cartoons and YouTube videos.
In Jingsong's piece, the musicians play according to a drawing of a musical tree, where the tree's leaves and branches are transformed into notes and lines. The piece can be played by all kinds of instruments, and for this, we have chosen the ensemble of violin, double bass, piano, trombone, tuba, and percussion.
Asli Emre's piece plays with interactive video and audience participation. And the concert concludes with Cornelia Karlsson's "Boys Night," which tries to recreate a boys' night with all its premises, wildness, and friendship.
