FAQ – Admission

We have gathered all relevant information about the application process on the page 'How to apply'. Additional information can be found in this FAQ.

If you need an accompanist for your entrance exam, you must bring and pay for the accompanist yourself. You are responsible for making all practical arrangements with the accompanist.

After the application deadline, you will receive an email with a list of accompanists who collaborate with RDAM. You are, of course, welcome to work with accompanists other than those on the list.

The entrance exams are primarily held in January and February for Bachelor's and Master's programmes, as well as in May and June for the Advanced postgraduate (soloist) programmes.

The Royal Danish Academy of Music is a higher educational institution, which requires students to be able to independently and responsibly plan and complete their studies.

For EU/EEA applicants

We have no age limit for admission for EU applicants, but if you are not yet 18 years old when you apply, we expect you to be able to meet the demands that will be placed on you as a student at a higher educational institution.

For non-EU/EEA applicants

You must be 18 years old by 1 August of the year you apply for admission, if you are not a citizen from an EU/EEA country.

Applicants from Ukraine with a temporary residence permit in Denmark granted under executive order no. 1378 from 03/10/2022 §2 can apply for admission as EU/EEA applicants.

There is a coordinated admission process for the Bachelor's programmes, and the application is sent to the music academy that is your first priority. Applicants are free to apply to different programs at different music academies. Master's and Advanced postgraduate (soloist) programmes are not coordinated between music academies. If you wish to apply to multiple institutions, you must apply and take the entrance exam at each relevant music academy.

Everyone who is registered in the CPR (Civil Registration System) is assigned a personal identification number, which consists of 10 digits. The first 6 digits are the registered person's date of birth, and the last four digits are so-called serial numbers, which are 'random' (Source: Borger.dk).

In the application form, you will be asked to provide your CPR number, but if you do not have a Danish CPR number, you can simply skip this field and proceed.

If you have previously attended another higher education institution in Denmark or abroad (e.g., at a university or a music academy), RDAM is obligated to grant you credit for any previously passed courses that can be transferred to the program at RDAM in which you are enrolled. This also applies to transfers from another Danish music conservatory.

Here, you can read about the rules for credit transfer and the documentation you need to include with your application.

If you have a documented disability (e.g., dyslexia) that requires you to take (parts of) the entrance examination under special conditions, you can apply for an exemption for this.

The exemption application must be sent to admission@dkdm.dk beofre the application deadline.

The exemption application must include:

  • Documentation of your disability
  • A description of what accommodations are needed to complete the entrance examination and why
  • And/or which parts of the entrance examination you are unable to complete and why

You must bring your own instrument to the entrance exam.

If you are going to an entrance exam on harp or double bass, we can help you borrow an instrument for the exam. In that case, you must contact the admissions office at admission@dkdm.dk

If you are already enrolled in a Bachelor's program at DKDM, you are guaranteed a study place in the corresponding Master's program at RDAM for up to one year after completing your Bachelor's studies.

However, you still need to apply for the Master's program no later than March 1st. As a third-year bachelor student, you will receive an email in February with further information on how to apply.

You can find information about the nearest MGK course in Uddannelsesguiden (the Education Guide). Here, you can also find your local music school.

RDAM is a Danish educational institution where the primary language of instruction and work is Danish – though communication occurs in both Danish and English.

All students and staff are expected to be able to communicate in English.

Read RDAM's language requirements and RDAM's  Language policy.

If an applicant is unable to attend the main subject exam due to illness, they will be offered a sick exam. The Academy will schedule one sick exam. If you fall sick for the sick exam, you will not be offered a new sick exam.

If the applicant does not pass exams in a supporting subject, a re-exam will be offered.

Sick exams and re-exams are scheduled by the Academy immediately following the entrance exam period.

The following study programmes are currently not offered to non-EU/EEA applicants:

  • Master's Programme in Repetiteurship
  • Master's Programme in Choir Conducting
  • Master's Programme in Voice, specialising in opera (The Opera Academy)
  • Young Artist Programme at the Opera Academy

If you wish to transfer to another conservatory in Denmark, you must complete an application form. You can obtain the application form from your current conservatory, where it must also be submitted. Your current conservatory will send your application to the conservatory you wish to transfer to. The conservatory you are applying to will then invite you for a transfer exam.

The deadline for application is November 15th at your current conservatory.

When transferring, you should be aware of the rules for credit transfer. Read about credit transfer.
