Analogy and enchantment
The project is headed by pianist Emil Gryesten and music historian Søren Schauser. Its focus is performing musicians’ need for analogies in preparation and interpretation of Romantic pieces: When are analogies, metaphors and extramusical references in general an efficient “translation” of the musical language? Which words are conducive for the composer’s intention, the teacher’s intention in the lesson and the musician’s intention during the concert? We can see the title “Träumerei” over a piano piece and since decide to play the piece as “dream-like” as possible – however, did Schumann necessarily mean a sweet dream and not a nightmare?
The results will manifest itself in three very different ways: Partly as four concert lectures with students from the academy and introductions to the power of analogy. Partly in Søren’s article “Analogy and Enchantment. On analogy and hermeneutic intuition in performers’ work with Romantic instrumental music”. And finally in Emil’s album “Transfigured - the romantic piano transcription” – an ambitious study on the piano transcription as genre and as a phenomenon.
