How Does It Make Sense?
In the artistic research project “How Does It Make Sense?” with the subtitle “Musical composition on a perceptual basis”, composer Niels Rosing-Schow explores the possibilities of anchoring the approach to musical composition in current knowledge about perception and the creation of meaning in music. This is an interdisciplinary field, involving perceptual psychology and elements of cognitive semiotics, including a relatively new field of research: musical semantics. Against this background, and in an openly critical and reflective process, Rosing-Schow develops new compositional strategies that he tests in the composition and performance of a new instrumental work for 12-15 musicians. The work will be performed at a public concert (lecture concert) and recorded on CD.
The project was presented on an ongoing basis to RDAM’s students and teaching staff through seminars and has been widely disseminated through a podcast series produced by RDAM, which is based on the project’s themes and reflects its progression.
The project was carried out in the period 2019-2022
The project is funded through a grant from the Ministry of Culture’s pool for artistic research.
