The Coupling of Sound – composing with nonlinear electroacoustic instruments
The project will attempt to redefine electroacoustic composition in a new sound-oriented compositional aesthetic. In a collaboration between RDAM and IRCAM, new “electroacoustic” instruments are developed, based on a technology called “active control”. This means that classical acoustic instruments are used as their own “speakers”.
Bringing acoustic and electronic sound together in the same source fundamentally affects the way “live electronics” is conceived and composed: A novel interdependence arises. As proof of concept, several new works will be composed which present the new technology in an artistic scenario.
The project holder has been invited to collaborate as a guest composer with IRCAM’s Department of Instrumental Acoustics, which will provide the manpower for the technical development of the project. At RDAM, the artistic and musical side of the project is being developed and will be presented in both seminar form and, when it is sufficiently mature, at a public concert.
