Peter Herresthal
Background
Award-winning violinist Peter Herresthal has appeared with orchestras and ensembles worldwide from Melbourne Symphony, with Thomas Adès conducting his Concerto at the Melbourne festival, Vienna Radio Symphony in Konzerthaus Wien, BBC Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta to numerous performances with the major Scandinavian Orchestras including Oslo and Stockholm Phil.
teaching
From fall 2019, Peter has been teaching at The Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
He is Professor at the Oslo Academy, visiting Professor at the Royal College of Music, London and NYU Steinhardt School New York. Recent master class and teaching visits include Manhattan School, Chicago institute, USC Thornton School in LA and spring 2018 visiting artist and professor at Oberlin Conservatory. He has previously held the position of Professor at Edsberg Manor and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (2002-2008) and was in 2018 elected foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy. Peter's former students work as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestra musicians all over Scandinavia, including several leaders and concertmasters.
Artistic practice
Peter has appeared with orchestras and ensembles including the BBC Philharmonic, Asko Schoenberg Ensemble, Vienna Radio Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Stockholm Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic, Nantes SO, Remix Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, Tapiola Chamber Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica de Navarra, Orquestra Sinfonica do Porto Casa da Musica, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Helsingborg Symphony, Oslo Sinfonietta, Oulu Sinfonia, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Kristiansand Symfoniorkester, Stavanger Symphony, Trondheim Symphony, Arctic Philharmonic Sinfonietta Usinta ensemble, Session Orchestra Paris and Bit20, with conductors including Andrew Manze, Thomas Adès, Nathalie Stützmann, Martyn Brabbins, Anu Tali and Sakari Oramo.
He has recorded 19 violin concertos earning ten nominations and five Norwegian Grammys. His Nørgård recording was shortlisted for a Gramophone Award and was Editor’s Choice in The Strad and International Record Review. For the last three seasons, Peter has been touring Europe and the US with Kaija Saariaho's aria “Vers toi es si loin” written for him and more than 20 performances of her violin concerto "Graal Theatre", most recently recording the work for BIS and TV production for BBC.
The recording was nominated for several awards, including the US Grammy awards.
During his studies, he was a member of the Norwegian chamber orchestra and engaged as co-leader of the Norwegian radio orchestra.
