History of Distance Learning at RDAM

RDAM began exploring the possibilities for developing Distance Learning in 2009. The first experiences of Distance Learning activities opened up for a broader range of masterclass teaching and offered new opportunities for telematic experimentation.

With a focus on the highest audio and video quality, specialised studio facilities were established. A research group was invited to further investigate the comparative perspectives between conventional and distance learning instrumental teaching approaches.

In 2011, the academy invited international partners and research/education specialists for a Distance Learning conference. On this occasion, teachers, engineers, and administrators shared knowledge and strengthened the Distance Learning community. In collaboration with partner universities and academies around the world, the scope of Distance learning activities has been continually increasing. Through the course of the last ten years, Distance Learning has become an integral part of teaching offered to RDAM students.

TIMELINE

Initial work on The Global Conservatoire starts. This is a cooperation between MDW Vienna, Royal College of Music, Manhattan School of Music and RDAM, where online courses are offered to students across all four institutions. From the spring of 2021 the courses were launched.

The Global Conservatoire

RDAM is hosting the Networked Performing Arts Production Workshop. Three days of presentations, discussions, workshops, masterclasses and concerts – all related to Distance Learning and Network Performance.

Find more info about these annual workshops at NPAPWS' website

The Global Audition Training program is established in cooperation with MDW Vienna, Cleveland Institute, New World Symphony and Shanghai Conservatory. Royal College of Music, London joins later. Through GAT, students are trained in the process of auditioning and receive live feedback from orchestral players from leading symphony orchestras around the globe.

Global Audition Training

Applications for Distance Learning technology are found in the field of music pedagogy and childhood music education as RDAM joins the international MiniFiddlers project, where students are trained in the ColorStrings-method from Sarestö Academy, Finland.

Pre-studies of the use of video-conferencing in higher music education is carried out by Mie Buhl, Rikke Ørngreen and Karin Levinsen from Aalborg University. This creates the foundation for three years of cooperation on research in the area. The results can be found on DL - Research & Development.

RDAM hosts an international workshop on Distance Learning with 60 participants from 25 countries. The workshop connects to sites at Cleveland Institute, Manhattan School of Music, Shanghai Conservatory, Sydney Conservatory, London Symphony Orchestra and Oulu University.

From here, Distance Learning establishes itself as an integral part of RDAM as an institution.

International workshop

The RDAM Distance Learning studio is finished. Built by Thomas Solak and Jesper Andersen around the early experiences and wishes from RDAM faculty.

STudio

A two-day workshop is arranged for the faculty interest group. David Geber and Christianne Orto of MSM participate locally in Copenhagen and several distance learning test sessions are carried out. From these experiences, the setup for the RDAM Distance Learning Studio is designed and work on establishing the studio starts up.

Thomas Solak And Jesper Andersen onboxes RDAM’s first PolyCom unit (an HDX8000). From an office-space, the first experimental video calls are made between Copenhagen and Odense.

First equipment

An “interest group” of faculty is established. The group discusses the use of technology and the foundation for later research- and development projects is laid.

Interessegruppe

Thomas Solak and Jesper Andersen visits Manhattan School of Music and meets up with Christianne Orto for more guidance on getting started.

A delegation from RDAM visits Manhattan School of Music and are inspired my MSM’s use of Distance Learning Technology. A working group, consisting of Marianne Løkke Jakobsen, Thomas Solak and Jesper Andersen is established and they start working on establishing the technological and institutional foundation for working with Distance Learning.
